New Beer: From Uinta Brewing

Posted January 3rd, 2012

Today the Co-op is excited to announce three new beers out of Salt Lake City, Utah.  Uinta Brewing has been in business since 1993, when they launched their first beers.  From a small, renovated mechanic’s garage located in Salt Lake City, Uinta began distributing a tasty variety of beer ranging from 4.0% to over 10% alcohol by volume to local bars, restaurants, and liquor stores.

The brewery has since moved into a larger, more sophisticated facility, and their production has expanded greatly.  Additionally, since 2001 Uinta Brewing has been 100% wind-powered, becoming the first Utah company to reach this mark. In an effort to continue its commitment to using renewable resources, Uinta Brewing installed solar-electric paneling on the brewery’s roof in 2011.

The Co-op now carries three varieties of Uinta Brewing’s beers: Hop Notch IPA, Dubhe Imperial Black IPA, and their Anniversary Barley Wine.  In celebration of these new arrivals, all three beers will be on sale for $7.99regularly priced at $8.99, through February 02, 2012!

And now, a little bit about each beer, courtesy of Uinta Brewing themselves:

Hop Notch IPA

DescriptionBold and refreshing, this IPA combines an abundance of hops with a smooth malt profile.  7.3% ABV

StoryA play on “Top Notch” with a hoppy twist..setting new trends for beer vocabulary, “this IPA is Hop Notch.”

Anniversary Barley Wine

DescriptionRich and complex, this all malt barley wine exhibits hints of dried fruits, toffee and caramel balanced by an abundance of American hops.  10.4% ABV

Tasting NotesFull malt taste, pleasant notes of nuts, chocolate, and dried fruit. Generously hoppy, delicately balancing the alcohol content. Finishes strong. Anniversary Barley Wine pairs well with cheeses such as blue cheese.

StoryFirst brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round.

Dubhe Imperial Black IPA

DescriptionToasted, chocolaty dark malts align with an astronomical amount of hops.  9.2% ABV

Story

Named Utah’s Centennial Star in 1996, Dubhe (pronounced Doo-bee) illuminates the front of the big dipper from 124 light years away. Dubhe, also known as Alpha Ursae Majoris, is a red giant that appears orange in color and has a mass 4x that of the sun.

During an impromptu taste-test with ACG staff, the Dubhe Imperial Black IPA was an overwhelming favorite out of the three.  Notes of coffee were tasted, and it had a very smooth start, with a hoppy finish.  Overall a nice IPA.

Come on in and get some to try for yourself, and clear your head of those stereotypes about beer from Utah!
