General Manager
The Alberta Cooperative Grocery is seeking a General Manager to lead the cooperative so that it achieves the goals and objectives developed by the board of directors. Position Summary: The General Manager will work to enhance the success of the Co-op through development of a positive work environment and a vibrant, healthy community store. The GM works collaboratively in accordance with the Co-op’s mission statement and the Cooperative Principles to promote and advance the vision, mission and goals of the Co-op as described by the board of directors, bylaws and policy governance. The GM is hired by and reports to the board of directors and is held accountable for the following areas of responsibilities: board-management linkage, planning, finance, operations, membership and outreach, and personnel.
Reporting Relationships: The General Manager reports to the board of directors, which is elected by the members of the cooperative.
Compensation: Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.
Required Qualifications:
• Minimum of two years experience in retail grocery
• Minimum of two years experience in management
• Familiarity with the cooperative business model and working with mission driven organizations
• Commitment to the mission of the Alberta Co-op and enthusiasm in promoting it
• Proven ability to implement a vision
• Strategic planning experience
• Proven ability to lead and motivate others to gain cooperation
• Understanding of the components of financial statements: what purpose each serves, how they relate to one another, and how they are different
• Operating, capital, and cash budgeting experience
• Proven ability to develop, maintain and improve systems
• Personnel experience (training, scheduling, personnel policies, performance evaluation, coaching and firing)
• Familiarity with membership programs, promotion, public relations, and marketing
• Experience with outreach
• Effective customer service skills
• Experience tracking and using quantitative and qualitative data and indicators of organizational performance
• Proficiency with computers and programs including spreadsheet and word processing applications
• Ability to use and encourage group decision-making and democratic process
• Ability to learn, value, understand and help preserve the culture and practices of the co-op workplace
• Experience with the creative process
• Willingness and ability to meet the needs of respect, acknowledgement, reassurance, and understanding
• Willingness and ability to share information, keep others informed, and promote open discussions
Desired Qualifications:
• Experience in retail natural foods management
• Experience in retail food co-op management
• Familiarity with cooperative membership benefit programs including patronage refunds
• Experience with survey design and analysis and other program evaluation and measurement tools
• Experience with Policy Governance
• Experience communicating with and reporting to a board of directors
• Proven ability in team building
• Experience selling in highly competitive market
• Understanding of the “local food” movement
• Willingness and ability to encourage others to create
• Ability to see and value each person’s gifts, and facilitate the creative process for a group
• Experience with transparency and openness
