Village Market is a new, community-designed and operated, healthy corner grocery store in the heart of New Columbia in North Portland. As part of the Village Gardens program, Village Market will build community, promote health, offer fresh, healthy, sustainably raised foods, and inspire a sense of hope for the neighborhood.
The Assistant Manager will be responsible for managing all aspects of the operation of the grocery store on a given shift. This will include supervising personnel, providing on-the-job training, and assisting the Project Manager in evaluating the performance of staff. The primary area of responsibility of this position is the management of people and the management of the store. The secondary area of responsibility will be monitoring inventory and sales trends, developing promotions and displays, and ordering and receiving products.
The Assistant Manager will function as part of the Leadership Team for the store and assist the Project Manager with overall inventory control, shift scheduling, store promotions, implementing safety practices, supervising the operation of the deli and creating a welcoming, safe and clean environment within the Market.
Village Market values a green philosophy, including a priority on purchasing and promoting local, sustainably grown products. Village Market will partner with other community food producers to obtain products from the nearly 85,000 square feet of organic, sustainable gardens operated by the community under the Village Gardens program.

Where’s the Wag?

Posted November 9th, 2011

by Amber, Perishables Buyer
Much to everyone’s chagrin, we have been out of stock of Wag Organics bulk farm direct eggs for a couple weeks now.  I’ve finally been able to get in touch with Wes, and I’m sorry to inform you all that our bulk farm direct eggs will be out of stock until spring.

Why so long?  Chickens lay less eggs in the winter, for a couple of reasons.  Their access to natural daylight diminishes, and most birds need about 14 hours to keep up production.  Winter is also the time of year when chickens molt, meaning that they are using a lot of their protein to create new feathers to keep them warm, thus directing less energy towards producing eggs.

To make up for this lack of supply, I’ve brought back an old favorite of the Co-op: Phoenix’s Egg Farm organic, farm direct, local eggs by the dozen.  Learn more about their farm and how awesome it is here, or check out the article I wrote last week regarding their Cornucopia Institute egg score card!
