Nine Years of Being a Community

opinion by Anni Mackin, Marketing and Design Coordinator

Alberta Co-op celebrates nine years of serving our community this month. While that is young for a co-op (most food co-ops in the US were founded in the 1970s), it is pretty impressive for a small corner grocery store started by a group of neighbors just wanting something better.

As many of you know, it has taken a lot of hard work, dedication, and love to bring the Co-op through the last nine years and into the present day where we are continuing to grow and thrive. To celebrate our birthday and appreciate all that the community has put into the Co-op, we celebrated with an Anniversary Breakfast this past Saturday.

I enjoyed seeing so many owners and community members turn out for some food, tunes, and old-fashioned whipped cream making. But perhaps what I enjoyed most of all was the mingling. Whether it was debates about the preferred nut butter for bagels or conversations around recent board decisions, people were actively participating in their community — making connections and sharing ideas. And, to me, that is perhaps the greatest benefit of being part of a cooperative.
